A large part of the course revolved around the finer points of hiking guiding. Pacing, for instance, is an often-overlooked skill but one that plays a crucial role in ensuring group cohesion and energy conservation on long treks. The guides learned how to read group dynamics and adjust the pace accordingly, balancing the needs of stronger hikers with those who may need a little extra time on the trail. Navigation was another focal point of the course. The Duffy region’s diverse terrain offered the ideal environment to practice map reading, compass use, and route planning. Guides learned how to anticipate potential challenges on the trail and plan alternative routes to ensure safety and enjoyment for their groups. We also spent time mastering knots and tarp setups, vital skills for creating shelter in the unpredictable backcountry.
