What are the Island Qualifiers?

The Island Qualifiers are a collection of nine classic alpine objectives established by the Alpine Club of Canada – Vancouver Island Section in the 1970s as a benchmark for alpine mountaineering on Vancouver Island. Originally created as "graduating peaks" for aspiring alpine climbers, the list has become one of British Columbia's most respected mountaineering challenges.

Each peak was chosen because it represents the characteristics of true alpine climbing on Vancouver Island, including remote access, glacier travel, alpine camping, route finding, and technical scrambling or climbing. Together they showcase the incredible diversity of the Island's mountains, from rugged ridges and glaciers to some of the wildest backcountry in British Columbia.

Today, climbers who complete all nine peaks can apply to receive the Rick Eppler Island Qualifiers Award, recognising one of Vancouver Island's great alpine achievements.

1. Elkhorn Mountain

1–2 Days | Advanced

Elkhorn Mountain is often considered the ideal introduction to the Island Qualifiers. Located in the heart of Strathcona Provincial Park, it offers an excellent combination of alpine hiking, enjoyable scrambling, and spectacular views. While it is the most accessible of the nine peaks, it is still a serious alpine objective requiring strong fitness, confident movement on exposed terrain, and good mountain judgement. With several route options available, Elkhorn provides an outstanding first step into Vancouver Island mountaineering.

2. Warden Peak

1–2 Days | Advanced

Warden Peak is a rugged alpine summit situated in one of Vancouver Island's quieter mountain ranges. The ascent involves remote alpine travel, route finding, and enjoyable scrambling through impressive granite terrain. Although less well-known than some of the other qualifiers, Warden offers an authentic wilderness experience with a real sense of commitment. Multiple route options exist, allowing the ascent to be tailored to current conditions and group experience.

3. Mount Harmston

3 Days | Advanced

Standing as one of the dominant summits of the Comox Glacier Group, Mount Harmston is a classic alpine expedition that combines remote camping, glacier approaches (conditions dependent), and enjoyable scrambling along the Southeast Ridge. The journey into Harmston is every bit as rewarding as the summit itself, taking climbers deep into one of Vancouver Island's finest alpine environments. With several approach options and multiple summit lines, every ascent is adapted to suit the prevailing mountain conditions.

4. Rugged Mountain

1–2 Days | Advanced

True to its name, Rugged Mountain delivers an adventurous alpine experience through wild and seldom-visited terrain. The summit requires confident route finding, exposed scrambling, and efficient movement across complex mountain terrain. Although typically completed in one or two days, Rugged offers a genuine sense of remoteness and commitment. Several ascent variations provide different levels of challenge depending on conditions and team objectives.

5. Nine Peaks

2–3 Days | Advanced

Nine Peaks is one of Vancouver Island's most aesthetic alpine objectives, featuring sweeping ridgelines, technical scrambling, and unforgettable views across Strathcona Provincial Park. Reaching the summit requires careful navigation and efficient travel through remote alpine terrain, rewarding climbers with one of the Island's most memorable mountain experiences. A number of different route options exist, each offering its own unique character and level of commitment.

6. Victoria Peak

1–2 Days | Advanced

Victoria Peak is renowned for its dramatic summit ridge and engaging alpine scrambling. The climb demands strong route-finding skills and confidence on exposed terrain while rewarding climbers with spectacular views over central Vancouver Island. Although achievable in one or two days, the mountain offers a true alpine experience and a variety of route options, ranging from more straightforward ascents to increasingly technical lines.

7. Mount Septimus

2–3 Days | Advanced

Mount Septimus is one of Vancouver Island's classic alpine peaks, offering a rewarding combination of glacier travel (conditions dependent), alpine scrambling, and striking granite terrain. Its remote setting and varied route options make it one of the most sought-after objectives in the Island Qualifiers. Depending on the chosen line and seasonal conditions, the ascent can range from a straightforward alpine climb to a highly committing mountaineering objective.

8. Golden Hinde

3–5 Days | Advanced

As the highest mountain on Vancouver Island, Golden Hinde is an iconic expedition that combines remote wilderness travel, alpine camping, glacier travel, and exciting summit scrambling. The mountain has earned its reputation through both its spectacular setting and the commitment required to reach it. Multiple approaches and summit routes provide a variety of expedition styles, making every ascent a unique adventure into the heart of Strathcona Provincial Park.

9. Mount Colonel Foster

2–3 Days | Expert+

Widely regarded as the crown jewel of the Island Qualifiers, Mount Colonel Foster offers one of the finest alpine experiences on Vancouver Island. Rising dramatically above the surrounding landscape, the mountain features impressive granite walls, exposed ridgelines, and multiple classic summit routes. Whether ascending the standard route or tackling one of its more technical lines, Colonel Foster demands excellent fitness, solid scrambling ability, strong route-finding skills, and sound alpine judgement. As the final objective in VIBE's recommended progression, it represents the pinnacle of the Island Qualifier journey and an unforgettable achievement for experienced mountaineers.
