This one-day Beginner Paddling Skills Course is designed to introduce you to the basics of kayaking in a safe and supportive environment.

For those new to paddling or people wanting to re-visit the basics, the course covers essential skills such as paddle strokes, boat control, launching & landing techniques and what to do if you come out of your boat. You'll also learn basic water safety, trip planning considerations, and how to handle your craft in calm waters.

If you’re looking to enjoy serene lakes or venture into gentle coastal paddling, this course provides the foundation to get you started with confidence and ease.

Beginner Paddling Skills

This one-day Beginner Paddling Skills Course is designed to introduce you to the basics of kayaking in a safe and supportive environment.

  • Difficulty: Beginner – No prior paddling experience required.

    Duration: 1 day (approximately 7.5 hours, including breaks).

    Location: Calm water environment such as a sheltered lake or bay. Specific location details provided upon registration.

    Group Size: Maximum 6 participants per guide to ensure personalised instruction.

    Fitness Level: Moderate – Basic physical fitness and comfort in water environments required.

    Experience Level: None required – perfect for first-time paddlers.

    Season: Spring through Fall (May to October).

  • Day Itinerary

    Morning:

    9:00 AM: Meet at the course location for introductions, gear fitting, and a safety briefing.

    9:30 AM: Learn about paddling equipment, safety gear, and pre water details.

    10:00 AM: Practice paddle strokes and boat control on calm water with individual feedback from instructors.

    Lunch Break (12:00 PM):

    Enjoy a scenic lunch break (bring your own meal) by the water, with time for Q&A about paddling techniques and water safety.

    Afternoon:

    1:00 PM: Practice launching, landing, and navigating small obstacles to build confidence and control.

    2:30 PM: Short paddling excursion to apply your skills in a real-world setting under the guidance of your instructors. Practice basic wet exit, so you feel comfortable if you were to accidentally capsize when you next go kayaking.

    4:00 PM: Wrap-up session with feedback, skill recommendations, and next steps for your paddling journey.

    4:30 PM: Course concludes.

    This course is ideal for anyone looking to gain foundational paddling skills in a supportive environment, preparing you for further exploration on the water!

  • What’s Included & Not Included

    Included:

    Paddle and personal flotation device (PFD).

    Instruction by certified and experienced guides.

    Safety equipment (e.g., throw bag, whistle).

    Course materials and water safety briefing.

    Not Included:

    Transportation to and from the course location.

    Meals, snacks, and beverages (bring your own).

    Personal items such as sunscreen, water bottles, and extra clothing.

    Kayak rental (Boat Rental can be organised by us; please contact if needed)

    • Fitness Level: Basic physical fitness and comfort in water environments.

    • Swimming Ability: Ability to swim 25 meters comfortably.

    • Clothing: Participants must bring appropriate clothing for water activities (e.g., synthetic/wool layers, water shoes, or sandals).

    • Positive Attitude: Willingness to learn and participate in a group setting.

  • After completing the Beginner Paddling Skills Course, you're ready to take your paddling experience to the next level with a guided Gulf Islands Paddling Trip. This multi-day adventure allows you to explore the stunning coastlines, sheltered bays, and vibrant marine life of the Gulf Islands.
    You'll refine your paddling techniques, learn basic navigation skills, and enjoy the thrill of journeying through some of British Columbia’s most beautiful waters. Whether you're seeking a relaxing escape or a chance to build on your paddling skills, the Gulf Islands trip is the perfect way to continue your paddling journey and experience the magic of coastal exploration.
